29.1.– 02.2. 2025
Exil
The Mizmorim Festival, which takes place in Basel from January 29 to February 2, 2025, is dedicated to the human theme of exile: 120 million people worldwide are on the run, with one and a half percent of the world's population being displaced persons. Jews have always been confronted with Exile, emigration, diaspora and Galut, with a forced life outside the “Promised Land” of Israel.
Under the central theme of Exile, Mizmorim presents around thirty artists and ensembles, two world premieres and several Swiss premieres.

Songs of Exile

All four composers presented in this program lived in America for some time, but only Antonín Dvořák moved to the "New World" voluntarily. Erich Itor Kahn, Hanns Eisler and Kurt Weill were forced to emigrate due to the persecution of Jews in Germany and had to build a new artistic existence for themselves in the USA.
Their works will be performed by the Gringolts Quartet together with Lawrence Power (viola), Silke Gäng (voice), Marco Scillironi (piano), Ema Grčman (cello) and Denis Linnik (piano).

Vienna is the focal point of this program. For Roman Haubenstock-Ramati, who came from Krakow, Vienna was the destination of his odyssey. For Erich Wolfgang Korngold, it was the place of his stage successes, and for Arnold Schönberg it was the site of his decisive battles for the renewal of music.
Performed by the Gringolts Quartet together with Ruben Drole (reciter) and Anton Gerzenberg (piano) as well as Silke Gäng (voice) and Marco Scillironi (piano).

The work October Sun by Mark Kopytman looks back to the musician's beginnings in the Soviet Union, while the Contrasts by Béla Bartók were written immediately before his emigration from Hungary to the USA.
Presented by Silke Gäng (voice), Ilya Gringolts (violin), Lawrence Power (viola), Reto Bieri (clarinet), Ema Grčman (violoncello) and others.

It is impossible to imagine modern music without the 88 keys of the piano. But sometimes it is also tapped on the body and even plucked on strings.
