On the Rivers of Babylon

Concert X
Monday, 29. January at 19.30 h
Bild: Anne-Hornemann

The tenth concert takes place in the Basel synagogue, and with good reason: this is where the Psalms of Scripture come very close to us. Salomone Rossi, Darius Milhaud and Aaron Copland came from Jewish families, and both join the psalmists in celebrating the blessings that come to the godly (faithful). Salomon Jadassohn was also a Jew and studied with Moritz Hauptmann in Leipzig and with Franz Liszt in Weimar. As a young man he led the choir of the Leipzig synagogue. With the 24th Psalm he set a probably pre-exilic processional song to music. In the 18th century the singer and organist Philip Hayes worked in Oxford. His four-part canon By the River of Babylon from 1786 triggered a whole wave of settings of this "Peace Psalm" that lasted (reverberated) into the late 20th century.
